About this guide
Visit Kaikōura is an independent travel guide to Kaikōura on the east coast of New Zealand's South Island. It is written by Patrick Kühne, a travel publisher based in Germany who also runs guides to Milford Sound and to towns in Lapland.
Not the official tourism organisation
This site has no connection to the Kaikōura District Council, to Destination Kaikōura or to any tour operator in town. Destination Kaikōura is the regional tourism organisation, run by an independent board and funded by the district council. Its website is kaikoura.co.nz, and the Kaikōura Visitor Centre at 75 West End answers questions in person. For walking tracks the Department of Conservation has the last word, and for road closures on State Highway 1 it is NZTA Journeys.
Where the facts come from
Distances, timetables, track times, rules and dates on this site come from official or primary sources: Destination Kaikōura, the Department of Conservation, the Kaikōura District Council, NZTA, GeoNet for the 2016 earthquake, NIWA climate averages, the US Naval Observatory for sunrise and sunset, DarkSky International and the Kaikōura Dark Sky Trust. Details about a single trip, such as the meeting point or the minimum age, come from the operator and from the tour page. Each article lists its sources at the end. We checked them in October 2026.
Sources do not always agree. The depth of the Kaikōura Canyon and the months for humpback whales are two examples. Where that happens we give the figure both sides support, or we say that the numbers differ.
Place names and the people of Kaikōura
We write Māori names with macrons, as Destination Kaikōura does: Kaikōura, Ōhau Point, Ngāti Kurī. Ngāti Kurī are the tangata whenua, the people of the land, here. Whale Watch Kaikōura, the only company that takes visitors out to the whales by boat, was founded by Ngāti Kurī families in 1987 and is still owned by them.
How tours are chosen
A tour appears here when it starts in Kaikōura and fits the subject of the page. Day trips that begin in Christchurch are listed only on the page about getting there. When the same trip is sold twice by the same operator, we show it once. Tours with a weak average rating stay off the site. Duration, pickup, age limits and what is included come from the tour pages, and a tour drops off the site automatically once the platform stops listing it.
Activities that no bookable tour covers, such as the Peninsula Walkway or the seal colony at Ōhau Point, appear as information only.
How the site earns money
Tour cards and comparison tables link to GetYourGuide and, for tours not listed there, to Viator. When you book through these links we receive a commission, and your price stays the same. Prices and ratings are loaded from the booking platform; we do not write them.
We do not sell tours and are not a tour operator. Questions about a booking go to the platform or to the operator named on the tour.
Photos
The photos come from Unsplash and Pexels. Where no suitable picture from Kaikōura was available, for example of a llama or of the night sky, we use one of the same subject taken elsewhere, and the caption describes only what the picture shows.
