Kaikōura itineraries for one to three days
A day from Christchurch is enough for the whales or the peninsula, rarely both. With two or three days you can add a kayak, a llama trek or the stars, and you have a spare morning if the sea is too rough.
The plans below start from what takes the most time and depends most on the weather: the whale cruise. Whale Watch Kaikōura asks you to allow about three and a half hours, including check-in, the safety briefing and the bus to the marina. Check-in times are 07:15, 10:00 and 12:45 all year, plus 15:30 from November to March. Boat and air tours can be cancelled at short notice when the sea or the wind is too rough, which is why one local wildlife operator recommends two to three days in Kaikōura.
Everything else is easier to move around. The peninsula needs no booking, most tours start within walking distance of West End, and the evenings are long in summer.
One day from Christchurch
By car the drive is about two and a half hours each way. Leaving Christchurch soon after 07:00 gets you to the 10:00 check-in for the whale cruise, which brings you back to town in the early afternoon. That leaves time for the seals at Point Kean and part of the clifftop walk before the drive back. In winter, remember that the sun sets before 17:00, so much of the return is in the dark.
The Coastal Pacific train works differently. In season it arrives at 10:00 and leaves for Christchurch at 16:15, which gives you about six hours. The 12:45 cruise check-in would bring you back too close to departure, so a train day suits the 30-minute whale flight from the airfield, the half-day llama trek or a pedal kayak tour better, combined with a walk to Point Kean.
Two days
Arrive the evening before, or early on the first day, and book the whale cruise for the first morning. If it is cancelled, you still have the second morning.
Day one, after the cruise: walk the Peninsula Walkway from Point Kean to South Bay, or do the full loop from town if you have at least three hours. In the evening, a guided stargazing session takes about an hour and a half. Kaikōura has been an International Dark Sky Sanctuary since September 2024. The organisers choose the location according to the weather and can change it at short notice; that decision can come up to an hour before the start.
Day two: if the sea stopped the cruise on day one, use this morning for it. Otherwise pick one activity. The pedal kayak tour takes 2.5 to 3 hours and leaves your hands free for photos of the seals. The llama trek lasts about three and a half hours, starts at the clock tower on West End and walks along the beaches to the seal colony. EcoZip's ziplines take about three and a half hours including the drive to Rakanui Station; a minimum weight of 30 kg applies.
A dolphin swim is another way to fill that second morning. Dolphin Encounter runs it all year from 96 Esplanade, with the first boat at 05:30 from mid-November to April and a single 10:00 trip from June to September. It is not in our tour list; you book it with the company. Like the whale cruise it depends on the sea, so do not put both on your only spare morning.
Three days or more
A third day lets you leave the coast. DOC puts the Mt Fyffe car park about 15 km from town. From there the easy Hinau Track loop takes 45 minutes, and the lookout on the Mt Fyffe route is about an hour's climb; the full route to Mt Fyffe Hut takes about five hours there and back and is graded advanced. Take a windbreaker even on a fine day, as DOC advises.
Back in town, the Kaikōura Museum on West End covers the 2016 earthquake in its exhibition New Normal, and Fyffe House, the oldest surviving building, stands on whalebone piles at 62 Avoca Street. Fyffe House opens daily from Labour Weekend to April and from Thursday to Monday in winter. The page on things to do in Kaikōura lists the scenic flights and other activities that fill a longer stay.

Adjusting for the season
In summer the light lasts. On 21 December the sun sets at 21:02, so an evening on the peninsula is easy, but the stars only come out late. In late June the sun sets at 16:59, the walks need an earlier start and the long nights suit stargazing. The extra 15:30 whale cruise runs only from November to March.
The water activities follow their own calendars. The seal swimming season opens again on 1 November 2026, and humpback whales pass roughly from June to August. Our page on the best time to visit Kaikōura goes through the months in more detail, and getting to Kaikōura has the train and coach times.

Questions travellers ask
How many days do I need in Kaikōura?
Two days cover the whale cruise, the peninsula and one more activity. Because boat and air tours can be cancelled at short notice in rough weather, one local operator recommends allowing two to three days.
Can I see the whales on a day trip from Christchurch?
By car, yes: leave Christchurch early enough for the 10:00 check-in. By train it is tight, because the Coastal Pacific arrives at 10:00 and leaves at 16:15, so a short whale flight fits better than the cruise.
What should I book first?
The whale cruise on your first morning. If it is cancelled because of the sea, you can move it to the next day, and if it sails without seeing a whale, Whale Watch refunds 80 % of the fare.
What can I do in Kaikōura in the evening?
In summer the peninsula is light until after 21:00. Guided stargazing takes about 1.5 hours, and the meeting point depends on the weather, so the organisers confirm it on the day.
Is Kaikōura worth a stop between Picton and Christchurch?
Yes, it lies on the way, about two hours from Picton and two and a half from Christchurch. With a morning arrival you can join a midday whale cruise or walk the peninsula before driving on.
