Getting to Kaikōura
Kaikōura has no airport with scheduled flights. Most visitors drive up from Christchurch in about two and a half hours or come down from the ferry at Picton. A coach runs every day, and in the warmer half of the year a scenic train stops in town.
Kaikōura lies on State Highway 1 on the east coast of the South Island, between Christchurch to the south and the ferry port of Picton to the north. Destination Kaikōura is clear that there is no commercial airport in the region. You arrive by road or by rail.
That was not always possible. Te Ara notes that before 1900 Kaikōura had only bridle tracks to the north and south, and there was no rail connection in either direction until 1945.
Flying in
For international visitors, Christchurch is the usual gateway. The airport handled 6.25 million passengers in its 2024 financial year and has more than 140 international arrivals and departures a week. Air New Zealand adds three long-haul routes from Christchurch this season: Singapore from 28 October 2026, Tokyo Narita from 28 November and Perth from 30 November. From Europe that still means at least one change in Asia or Australia.
Marlborough Airport near Blenheim is the other option, especially if you are travelling down from the North Island. Tourism New Zealand lists domestic flights to Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch and Paraparaumu, and an InterCity stop about 100 metres east of the airport entrance. Its schedule has changed over the years, so check the current routes with the airlines. By car the airport is about two hours from Kaikōura.
Kaikōura's own airfield lies a short drive south of town. It serves the whale-watching flights and helicopter tours, not scheduled services.
Driving on State Highway 1
Destination Kaikōura gives these distances and driving times:
- Christchurch, 180 km, 2 hours 30 minutes
- Picton, 156 km, 2 hours 5 minutes
- Blenheim, 140 km, 1 hour 45 minutes
- Nelson, 250 km, 3 hours 25 minutes
- Greymouth, 327 km, 4 hours 30 minutes
- Westport, 328 km, 4 hours 30 minutes
The coast road has been closed twice in ten years. After the earthquake of November 2016 State Highway 1 reopened during the day on 15 December 2017 and around the clock only from 20 April 2018. In July 2026 the Kōwhai River broke its banks, a state of emergency was declared, and the Conway River flooded parts of the highway south of town. The northern section towards Ward was open again on 8 July and the road from Cheviot on 15 July. In early August NZTA still warned of delays of up to 20 minutes at a work site near Hawkswood.
The inland route, Route 70, was still closed in mid-July 2026. Before setting off, look up both roads on NZTA Journeys, which Destination Kaikōura also links to.

The Coastal Pacific train
Great Journeys New Zealand runs the Coastal Pacific between Christchurch and Picton. The fact sheet on Destination Kaikōura's website gives these times:
- Northbound: Christchurch 07:00, Kaikōura 10:00, Picton 12:40
- Southbound: Picton 13:40, Kaikōura 16:15, Christchurch 19:30
The train is seasonal. The operator says it does not run from 26 April to 31 August, while Destination Kaikōura describes the season as running from late September to the end of April, four to seven days a week in summer and the shoulder season. Check the timetable for your dates before you plan around it.
From Christchurch the train makes a day trip possible: arriving at 10:00 and leaving at 16:15 leaves about six hours in Kaikōura. Our Kaikōura itineraries show what fits into that.
InterCity coaches
InterCity runs a daily service. In Christchurch the main stop is outside the Bus Exchange on Lichfield Street, according to both InterCity and Destination Kaikōura. The journey to Kaikōura takes about 2 hours 40 minutes and ends at 86 West End. Coaches also come down from Picton, Blenheim and Nelson; the full Christchurch to Picton run takes about eight hours.
A day trip with a dolphin swim
If you only have one day and are based in Christchurch, an organised trip saves the driving. The day tour by Leisure Tours lasts about 12 hours. It collects you from your hotel in Christchurch, drives up through North Canterbury and includes a swim with wild dusky dolphins off Kaikōura in a wetsuit, plus a stop at a seal colony.
The conditions are strict. Children must be at least 8 to swim, and under-3s cannot go on the boat. Swimmers need to manage up to 50 metres back to the boat, and swimming aids are not allowed. Lunch is not included. If the dolphin boats do not sail once the tour has started, only the unused part is refunded, so the sea on the day matters a great deal.
Before you fly
German citizens and travellers from other visa-waiver countries can stay in New Zealand for up to three months without a visitor visa, but they need an NZeTA, an electronic travel authority, before departure. Each NZeTA request also carries the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy, NZD 100 as of October 2026. Apply at least 72 hours ahead and use only the official app or website of Immigration New Zealand. Your passport has to be valid for at least one month beyond your planned departure.
Biosecurity rules are strict. Soil, plants, seeds, fruit and many food and animal products are banned or restricted, and walking shoes and camping gear should be clean and declared. For moving around once you have arrived, see getting around Kaikōura.
